Over the last year, we have been working to understand sustainability within our business, to enable us to make decisions that will drive improvements. We decided to build on our systems and seek certification to ISO 14001:2015 (Environmental Management Systems) and BES 6001 (Responsible Sourcing) as this would mean that not only would we have robust systems to manage our own internal impact, but we would also follow our raw materials back to source, so that we could have confidence that everyone within our supply chain as also doing the right thing.
Now it is time for our first update.
Systems & Governance
We have maintained our BSI KiteMark for Concrete – meaning that not only can you be assured that our products meet the highest standards of quality, but the quality controls that we put in place mean that we generate less waste.
We achieved registration to ISO 14001:2015 with BSI. This not only covers our production activities, but our pumping service as well. This mean that you can be assured that we are not only legally compliant when it comes to all of our products and services, but that we are also striving for continual improvement.
We have now been through both audit stages for BES 6001 and have received a recommendation for certification at the “GOOD” level.
In addition to the above, we have also been recommended for FORS Bronze.
We have grown over the last year, with all new and existing employees being assessed for training needs and receiving the training that they need to operate in an environmentally aware manner.
Our workforce has become more diverse, with ongoing monitoring established.
All of this is externally verified by the likes of BSI – so we are just talking the talk, we are working to ensure that our workforce is truly representative of society.
We have identified our aspects and impacts and taken a lifecycle perspective to ensure that all of our interactions with the environment are considered when operating or targeting improvements.
Raw Materials are sourced responsibly, with over 90% of raw materials originating with companies who also have certification to ISO 14001 and ISO 9001, as well as BES 6001. This means that we have the highest performance rating possible for responsible sourcing.
Resource use has been analysed, with measures and programmes in place to identify the intensity of resource use within the business. We have looked to reduce the amount of water used to manufacture our products and consideration of electricity consumption is now part of our operational planning and controls.
We measure miles travelled and fuel used for our growing fleet of vehicles. This combined with a move to EURO 6 compliant vehicles means that our emissions are kept as low as possible. Membership of schemes, such as FORS and CLOCS, also means that all of our drivers are subject to ongoing training, which includes both the protection of other road users and the planet.
Our Carbon Footprint has been established for 2021 and in comparison to 2020, we are selecting our raw materials in a carbon sensitive way. In 2021, the use of alternative (non OPC/CEM I) materials has already reduced our overall footprint by over 25% compared to what it would have been.
Waste generation has now been benchmarked, with objectives in place to ensure that the waste that we do generate is minimised and handled appropriately, to maximise the potential for recycling. Our internal recycling and re-use of most production waste means that we continue to operate at very low levels of waste generated as a proportion of our production.
