Here at EasyMix, we’ve helped countless companies see complex, time-sensitive construction projects through to completion, so we thought it was only fair to share some of our industry knowledge with you, a budding DIY enthusiast! From planning, to budgeting, to having a backup plan – we’re going to be covering everything you need to know, so let’s dive in shall we?

Start with a timetable

When you’re starting a DIY project, the finish line can seem so far away. You have a range of different tasks that require all of these different tools, so you wouldn’t be blamed for feeling a little demotivated.

To combat this, we recommend the first thing you do is create a timetable of all of the tasks that you will need to do at some point during the project’s timeline. This way, you can take it one step at a time and make steady progress towards your goal.

Budget carefully

Budgeting can be a very difficult thing to do, especially if you’re new to DIY and you’re not quite sure of A) all of the different materials, tools and labour you might need, and B) the cost of those things!

This stage will require a fair bit of research on your part, so it’s better to get all of this done and out the way before the project begins to make sure the money you’ve put aside doesn’t run dry halfway through the project.

Top tip: if there’s anything that you think you might need but you’re not 100% sure, set budget aside for it but don’t actually purchase it. By doing this, you will be able to work out the feasibility of the project before it begins and won’t be hit with nasty surprises down the line.

DIY concreting

Potential disruptions

Trust us: construction projects, whether they’re simple DIY builds or huge commercial operations, rarely go exactly according to plan. With this in mind, before you get started, try and note down any potential pitfalls that might knock your project off course. Here are some of the most common ones that you might need to think about for a DIY project:

  • Do you need good weather to complete the project?
  • Does the projected completion date hinge on certain deliveries arriving at the right time?
  • Have you asked anyone – maybe a friend or family member – for help during the project? Do you think they will actually be available?

This leads us neatly onto the next point.

Have a backup plan

Have you drawn up a list of all of the potential obstacles that you might face during the course of the project? Great, now you need to imagine that all of those potential obstacles are in fact realities you need to deal with. What now? Whether it’s simply a case of putting back the completion date or having to hire some help, make sure you get all of this down, as this will affect your budget (see how it all fits together?)
